These eleven haiku were written for Wolf Twin Tré, who inhabits a landscape somewhere between the natural and supernatural, where the trees have memories, the hills keep secrets, and love is a kind of wild magic. They are poems of affection, longing, desire, and the peculiar enchantment of knowing someone who makes the ordinary world seem extraordinary.
chestnut grove—
the whole hillside
listening for her
under the hill
she loosens her hair
and winter waits
witch hazel—
her name passing
from branch to branch
foxglove—
she touches my wrist
and the bells open
a bed of foxfire—
she leaves her footprints
inside my dreams
first plum blossom—
I almost tell you
everything again
moon behind clouds—
you walk beside me
without needing light
winter orchard—
you name the tree
I lean against
autumn field—
you know which silence
belongs to me
pawpaw season—
the road home
sweet on our hands
moonless hollow—
she calls the wolves
by their childhood names
