Poems by Jeff Bagato

America’s Porn Star Love

down below heroes
lie the gods of good American mind,
dolly and doll boy of the video revolution
pumped and plasticized for day
dream constitution—you have
the right to your own hand—
at last thinking freedom has come,
but it’s only the mind-blown,
peter soft rent-a-box salvation
coursing thick thru American
veins like a gallon of white
paint in a money shot xtravaganza—
all over the tits and the walls—
never use a squirt when
a flood will do—heavier
love pretends inspiration arriving
in a naked eye; who does
the looking?
                     It’s the frozen
eyes of fear staring thru thick
glasses hoping to keep passions
contained to the screen & remote,
on/off knobs joy ride fast forward—
pause—look closer—we’re just now
going to come—when it’s all over
we can go back to living
deep in the superego duck blind,
the hunter gathering new
ammo for his next load

Life on the River, Ripened on the Vine

Mowgli sits on Baloo’s chest down
the river, smoking hash in a
turf brown water pipe;
“Pass the tube, please,” dreams
the bear as they drift by an
old guy with his thumb out,
nursing a cigar and shriveled
like a pitted prune—if you
are what you eat, they can’t
be that good for your digestion—
and the guy says, “Soup
at the All American, yes
boys, good boys”—
the river patiently pulling at Baloo’s
nuts before he realizes this is that part
of the Amazon infested
with pirahna; he sticks drainage
pipe from the bong below the surface,
and stones every water mite within
three miles in an inky cloud like a great white
octopus from the bowel of Satan—
bleaching the rocks, and
even his fur got blond—
“That’s all I need,” the bear laughs,
“to look like the president
of the United States of America!”—
white people now cheering
from the banks like bees around
fungus, each man seeing a
metaphor for his own fight up the stream,
each blow a good one struck for him
in his struggle, each footstep
made for his glory, that greater good,
linking hands across tribulation, one
long bridge of humanity kissing
ass like a leech—Baloo bellows
“I can feel ‘em from here”—
their words like white
petals falling from purling
lips, an ogre’s maggots fountaining
down on the pair—
“take the stage at your own risk
and walk swiftly lest
they pull the
plug”

Ouija at the Feast

Ouija dons her rags
and enters the illusion—
false colors, false waters,
blind corridors secured
with wire and video eyes,
where clumping slime prays to angels
for a dungball feast laid out so pretty
to feed the masquerade,
all the dancers pushing forward
to grab their share of an everlasting meal,
and so the fantasy begins:

“Once upon a diamond”
(Ouija writes) “we had plenty
and we made it scarce
hiding it in vaults of desire
and put price tags on the beauty of flowers
and took water and air out of circulation,
and so utopia was paved
for magic cars and magic beans
and the magic toys all dumped
from a sack like everyday is Christmas—
No bricks made those walls,
but they stand firm
as long as they remain invisible”

Ouija leaps into the punch
bowl, splashing fruit juice
on the monkeys and the mimes
who riot and wreck
the feast table to the ground
before running into the night
screaming for rain

and winds and destruction

Eat Your Own Dogfood

the bigmouth singers
lapping at the edges
of human decency
waiting for an in
like a tweet autocorrected
into daydream reality,
a twilight world
at the tip of remembrance
where dogs eat dogs
and jello makes a main course
for the barking millions—
why not push all
the choco bars
into the middle of the room
where anyone can
grab one on a whim
like plucking diamonds
in the sunshine,
‘cause the sparkle
makes a diamond real,
like taking a banana
from a bartender
and hoping for booze,
like rubbing a lamp
and expecting a genie
to appear with three wishes
and a bag of hamburgers,
all fat free and smothered
in peanut butter;
you got your can of mollusc stew,
a propane stove and a case
of Budweiser, so you’re ready
for anything, just not
the things you’re supposed
to do, or those that come
with a deadline

Resistance to Extinction

Mars plays with a plastic
eraser as the sun goes down,
which he eats, and then is ready to hit
the bars, ‘cause he can’t listen to non-existent
radio; he won’t nod to the dollar man;
he doesn’t carry false teeth
in his hand—and is stopped for
running without identification;
“Things are getting worse,” Mars
says, “First it was the candy
tax, then the smile wars,
broken radio, the castrated
muse, and now false teeth
requirements; well, I resign;
I refuse to carry a badge,
walk the straight line, recite
the alphabet backwards and
forwards, step in time to virus
rhythm like a chokehold on the
American mind—there’s a whole
world out there where nothing
is true, not even the cocks and
pussies of the tight-lipped
millions, and if I can’t shake
the tree till the apple falls,
then you have no choice
but to kill me,
                      America

Plastic Love by Design

Aesthetic plastic radio waves for goodbye
Charlie on the dime, his last two
nickels rubbed raw in the phone booth
and answer from Rhonda not forthcoming—
she’s tied up with anaesthesia
on a stainless steel slab, laying
like hair in a pile, like an old lady’s wig,
ass in the air for another blade,
a better love, a figure
retired and aspiring
to the surgeon’s knife and the heat
suture of the blood-free work zone—
sorry, babe, it was you
piled there like the moldy grapefruit
I found in the refrigerator rear—
and maybe while my hand
was up those ass cheeks like in a seatcover
loose around styrofoam peanuts, I left
the fruit behind and got to carry a silicone
bag home to my baby for a teething
lesson—a little schooling in all that’s pretty
and bright and free to love me
better death—
                      We’ll never
work again after we face alone
the destruction of the gods—
stitches across the mons, up the back and arm,
like a teddy bear’s vomit in a flea
market stall-

if your swine flu isn’t perfect
                                         make it perfect;
                                                     if your hepatitis isn’t
                                 perfect make it perfect;
                     if your diabetes—
                                             if your hypertension—
                                     if your herpes—

                                          if your AIDS isn’t perfect
                            make it perfect
in the land of the free and the heart
                                   of the storm,
                                              in the villages of parkland,
in the world of the perfect,
                                       the proud,
                                                    the mall-bound
                                 worshippers of ceramic disease—

                               collectible, hand painted, numbered
                                            and limited unto infinity
                      and the 4th dimension,
                                                      with certificate
                                    of authenticity intact

                                           your perfect gangrene;
                         your perfect melanoma;
                                   your perfect pneumonia,
                                                          scurvy and gout;
                                         your perfect TB and
                                                  MRSA

                                           immune
                                   to penicillin, amoxicillin,
                                               and the wonder
                     cocktails of chemical chains
                                        that cannot bind perfection,
                                                           liberty,
                                                prosperity,
                                     happiness and wealth

                                    the perfect sunshine—
                                                         the perfect day—
                                            the perfect wiggle,
                              jiggle & bounce—
                                                 the perfect
                                          jeans with the perfect
                                                       fit—

                                            the perfect measles—
                           the perfect dysentery—
                                                      the perfect malaria—
                                      the perfect cholera—
the perfect nausea of a fluorescent
                                                hallway day

Shit on a Stick Corporation

                                Fried shit on a stick
                                          on TV
                         on the dark
                                    side of Mars—

                      greasy reaching out to
                                           embrace the universe
          where every rock has eyes
                          weeping coins onto the sand,
                quasars pulsing radio
                                   signals faster
                                                 and faster out
                               to satellite relay

                                   My operator,
                                             my switchboard
                 makes a connection—
                          once upon a time
                                         in the kingdom of Atlantis
                              they fired up some offal,

                                        some yummy, chewy,
                                              crispy,
                unmentionable part of the hog
                           battered up & natural
                                                  juicy with its own juice,
fat to drip down your chin
                                                           when you first
                                                   bite off
                                                         the tip
                             In the freezer section
                                      you have to
                                               imagine that
                                  moment

as pictured on the box, as seen
                                           on the commercial,
as heard in person when endorsed by Bigfoot,
I mean, Elvis or Elton, or some guy
with a stiff upper lip, or that lady
who used to play that hooker who
                                        cracked her gap-toothed gum
                                                         so chuckle,

                                                so haw,
                                                          so hee hee,
                                 so lorf lorf lorf lorf,
                                                             and so
                                                     whew!

                                    No,
                                               not her,
                                         no—
                            but the other one
                                           from the oscar winning
movie where she was pregnant and fought
                                  off the mob with one
                                                  hand and masturbated
                                                              a monkey
                                            with the other

                                              Not so haw
                                   haw hee,
                                         but it was a good
                                                         one

                         How richly that made her
                                                 bite into that first crust
                                & tongue au jus
                                        as it sprayed and then
                                                      drippingly oozed
                                            down her chin

                                 The camera held
                                           high, at a jaunty angle
                        to portray her
                                 passionate and sincere
                                        recital:

                                       oh america,
                           oh atlantis, oh mars, oh
                                                      I feel the fullness
of my feelings of my heart,
                                          of my soul
                                                 in my belly—
                                             in my
                                                       belly

                                   quasar pulsar beep beep
                                                 to the radios
                                           of stars
                                                     & all

                                               in
                                                       my
                                                 belly,     oh
malignant tumor speaks from the brig
(or, eating from the same trough)

Let me offer you a deal,
                                            an edge
                                                  that will turn your paper
                                                                into gold
& keep you on the cruise
                                         line unto Alzheimer’s—

                                  the ship sets sail
                                            today with a paid ticket,
                        puts your kids through college
                                                 and the Hummer
                                    thru the gas line;

                                                    we build our pyramids tall
                                                                      & strong
                                           & pay out reg’lar—
                                                          the hamburger
                              sizzles on everybody’s griddle,
                                                and you get
                                                              freedom fries with that—
                                                                        if you can
                                                      just
                                                         wait rock steady
                                              right here,
                                                              right now

                                                 let the market
                                   bully up some exuberance
                for the chocolate covered turds
                                                            & used Kleenex,
                                          bloody tampons, and
you get the drift of second
                                     hand smoke
                                         (equal deadly to the first
                                                     smoke as you
                                              come
                                                  to find out)

the buffet opens in just a few
                                                                               more hours,
                                                                     loaded with
                                                       hushpuppies, bread lines
                                               & soup kitchen rolls—
                                                                           are you rolling?
                                                                 we shoot craps

                                                        and the entertainment!
                                            first class all the way,
with a parade of paper pushers & buck
                                                             whisperers & all
                                               the president’s men
                                       highstepping
                                                  & hat tossing, and
                                    squealing with popular songs
                                                                 of sixpence and
                                                       jiggety jig jig

                                                             keep sniffing from that
                                      feedbag filled with glue;
                                                                     such sweetwater
so good for what ails you:
                                          a glass a day
                                                   keeps the bears away

                                                                    get yours
at the altar with the thin
                                                               dimes & the (economic) resurrection—
                                                                                  as the priest
                                                        prays from his ledger,
                                         you sleep soundly in the pews;
                                                                      just keep your plastic
                                                                                handy for when he

                                                               passes the plate
