Three Poems By Christopher Barnes

Outsider

Epsom, king’s ransom dash,
A fashioned horse-shoe on the plane
Dances attendance to its kick-off.
Amy Winehouse, Rehab Day’s jockey,
Has unclomped tension.
Two gallops in the ruck
Blast-stun hooves disorientate turf.
She outscoots Lester Piggott,
Winning by a beehive.

Mean Streets

King Richard III dawdled in Notting Hill.
Witching hour teddy boys threw malice on hooliganism.
Racists seized bludgeons, dismantled railings,
Weighted leather belts.
Caribbean windows rammed,
Petrol bombs scarred bricks, mortar.
Blood-lust – all too English.

The Evidence Net

Arthur Conan Doyle refined an eardrum
To nuclear hissing.  A skimming disk
Asteroiding Roswell’s desert.
The break-up was forecast
By trigger-hot plain-clothers,
Hunkered under static.
Junk-drop: foil, rubber, timber,
Quick-changes for photographs.
His give-and-take with baffled newshounds
Slipped away in a waste paper basket.
